THOUGHT
For years, I read the 6th chapter in Ephesians with a sense of awe. I understood that our warfare—our struggles—extend beyond what is natural or perceivable by the physical senses. Wrestling “not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, the rulers of darkness, and spiritual wickedness in high places” was not a difficult concept for me to grasp because of the unexplainable things that have happened in my own life.
I have experienced supernatural healing that left both me and my doctors baffled. I have faced problems I had no idea how to solve—yet they were resolved in ways I never orchestrated. And I have received favor from people who blessed my life in ways that, even now, leave me in complete wonder.
For a long time, I imagined being a soldier in armor the same way I approached studying for a difficult test or memorizing Scripture to prove my worthiness as a disciple. But I was always puzzled by verse thirteen: “Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
The word stand confused me. Why put on armor if all God wanted me to do was stand? Isn’t armor for fighting? Why didn’t God provide instructions on how to swing the sword, how to charge, how to attack?
Then one day, understanding hit me like a lightning bolt:
“We wear armor because, as God’s disciples, we are already in battle.”
My answer came in the definition of the word “stand”: which means to be upright; to remain unmoved; to hold firm in a position or belief; to endure or resist pressure or opposition.
To stand as a child of God means to:• Stand in truth—because our relationship with God gives us spiritual authority as we face every enemy and every situation. (girdle of truth)• Stand in righteousness—because the righteousness of God will prevent us from falling prey to the fiery darts of temptation, insecurity, hopelessness, or fear. (breastplate of righteousness)• Stand in peace—because God has given us compassion even for those who oppose or attempt to harm us. (sandals of peace)• Stand in confidence—because we have security in the salvation purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. (helmet of salvation)• Stand wielding the Word of God—because God’s Word establishes, verifies, and confirms everything. (sword of God’s Word)• Stand knowing we are victorious—because our God is Jehovah, who reigns in victory. (The whole armor of God)
So, as we face this chaotic, confusing, hate-filled, and evil world, I encourage you: Continue seeking God. Continue studying His Word. Continue praying and fasting. Put on the whole armor of God. And then—having done all… STAND!!
Realize this: You are not standing still.
You are standing because…you are equipped. You are standing because…you are covered. And you are standing because…YOU ARE ALREADY ON THE WINNING SIDE!!
