THOUGHT
Last week, in our discussion on Family, I concluded the Word of the Week with “Love One Another,” emphasizing that humanity must accept each individual as a beautiful creation of God to achieve harmony within the family of man.
The nucleus of the family of man are adults that we call parents. Parents are responsible for the continuation of the species by protecting their children as they learn how to survive in their environment.
Humans, just like other mammals, are to provide the skills necessary for their offspring to survive the dangers of predators and other environmental threats.    However, unlike other his relationship with other mammals, God created the parental roles for human fathers and mothers to resemble that of God’s relationship to humanity.

According to the Word of the God, the father is to resemble God as head of the family exemplifying authority and discipline while providing for the needs of the family while instructing them in wisdom and faith. The mother is to support her husband, while nurturing, teaching, and providing discipline as she lives a life of faith.   Together, their lives should testify to the power and authority of God as they teach their children how to coexist with other humans in an atmosphere of love and security as caretakers of this planet.

In contradiction to God’s plan, however, humanity’s redefinition of the family attempts to nullify the power and authority of God.   The changing roles of males and females is resulting in the abdication of men from their roles as the authority and provider in the home while the influence and power of women increases in all areas of society.  Furthermore, society’s increasing dependency on technology, the threat of nuclear annihilation, and the infiltration of sin in all facets of our lives is contributing to the disintegration of the family as God intended. If humanity is to survive, parents must realign with the Word of God.

As parents, it has become imperative that we choose to live the words that we profess to believe.  To do otherwise makes a mockery of the Word of God and puts our children in danger.  It is not enough to preach and teach the Word.  We must believe the Word then live as witnesses to the power and glory of God for the survival of our children in this ever-changing world.

Parents have been given the authority to intentionally nurture and guide their children by providing: • Situations that illustrate our love, faith, forgiveness, grace, patience and endurance. • Training in prayer, and introduction to the wisdom of the scripture. • Instruction on practical life application of the Word of God.• Discipline that teaches personal and social boundaries. • Instruction as they discover their unique personalities, talents, struggles and skills.• Guidance on sharing their faith with others. And last, but, by no means least…• an example of what it means to be a child of God in word and deed.
As a parent I pray, “Dear God, help me to be a living testimony!”
